Makers gotta make

It's been almost a year since I posted so I don't know if anyone will care but here are a few of the things I've been making this year. There was felt, polymer clay, sterling silver, copper enamel and collage. I tried laser cutting, beading and knitting hand warmers. I still have a love affair with paper, printing and linoleum prints. So many ideas and so little time.

Felt Collage

I am continuing to experiment with fiber and collage. In this piece I started with a needle felted base, cut out three holes and then covered them with gauze and silk. I stitched them together with a new japanese paper thread I just discovered. This is the result.

Needle Felting Basics - Workshop

Needle felting

I'm really excited to announce that I'm giving my first workshop in Needle Felting on March 10 at a cool space in East Ballard called Space to Create. The workshop is $45 and includes all materials: wool roving, foam mat, and two felting needles. We'll be experimenting with fiber and will focus on making pins, rings and cuffs. You'll be with other folks who love to make things with their hands and if you love stabbing things...this really is for you!

Needle Felting: Roving and Hand Dyed Silk

It's been really cold and foggy in Seattle for the last five days. I've been battling the dreariness with color! Coral and Turquoise have been the basis of my color palette and roving, hand dyed silk and beads have been my materials.

I wanted to experiment with dyeing very lightweight silk and used ColorHue dyes which are used in cold water and don't require heat setting. Very simple but you can get some great results.

The roving was already dyed and has great subtleties of color in each bunch.
Here are the results of my experiments.

Double Rainbow

I went with a group of artists to Tieton last weekend on a big yellow schoolbus. It was a blast. I piece of my needle felting was included in an art show there called 10x10x10 (everything had to be smaller than 10 inches. On the way home, we saw this double rainbow. As the youtube video guy, bear, says "What does it mean?"

The drive over to eastern washington is beautiful. This is the yakima river right driving on canyon drive.

We were also in the town's community days parade. The yellow schoolbus was a hit. This was my second time to be in a parade this summer. It was fun.

 This is Lucas, he hung the show and organized the event. All the artists love him!

 Mighty Tieton is an old fruit warehouse. this was a cold room. It has great acoustics and Trimpin sometimes does performances there.

I'm teaching classes in Needle Felting

I'm going to be teaching needle felting beginning this fall. The fee is $20 an hour in your home or mine. There is a starter kit you can buy with will include everything you need to get started. Felting base, needles and an assortment of wool roving. The cost for the kit is $10 or you can provide your own supplies.

I've been obsessed with needle felting for the past year. It basically consists of stabbing raw wool (roving) with a special felting needle. You can form the felt into any kind of creature or thing you want. This is a pincushion I made with needle felting.
